Mara, the God of Confusion, realized this was his last chance to stop Siddhartha from attaining enlightenment and spreading wisdom throughout the world. Mara summoned armies, filled with fearsome creatures from other realms, and caused a terrible storm in order to distract Siddhartha from meditating. Mara is said to have ten armies - sensual desire, boredom, hunger & thirst, craving, sloth, terror, uncertainty, hypocrisy, undeserved notoriety, and pride. The contrasting solo sections in this piece represent attacks by the armies of sensual desire and terror respectively, while the main theme represents Mara's malevolence followed by Siddhartha's peaceful reply. Eventually, Mara realized that it was impossible to distract Siddhartha from his task, so he demanded that Siddhartha move from his place underneath the tree, asking Siddhartha what right he had to sit there. Siddhartha replied that he had earned the right to sit there because he had practiced the "Ten Perfections" of generosity, virtue, renunciation, wisdom, effort, patience, truthfulness, determination, loving-kindness and equanimity. Mara accused Siddhartha of of lying and asked him who had witnessed him practicing these perfections. Siddhartha replied by lowering his right hand and touching the earth, in a gesture referred to as "Calling the Earth To Witness". This discourse is found in the Samyuttanikāya, Mahāvagga, Saccasamyutta — the Great Chapter of the Book of Kindred Sayings, in the collection of sayings on the Truths. It is also found in the narrative of the Vinaya Mahāvagga, Pañcavaggiyakathā — the Great Chapter of the Vinaya Pitaka in the story of the group of five ascetics who attended on the bodhisatta for six years during his practice of asceticism. _______________________________________ The full title is the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, but it is widely known as the Dhammacakka Sutta. After attaining Enlightenment the Buddha was at first reluctant to teach the Dhamma that he had realised. He considered, "This Dhamma is profound and goes against the flow of sensual desire; most people are strongly attached to and immersed in sensual pleasures." However, he reasoned that some were not too strongly attached, and were already searching for truth. They would be able to understand it. First he thought to teach it to Ālāra Kālāma, who had taught him meditation to attain the realm of infinite consciousness, but devas told him that Ālāra had passed away only last week; and he realised this was true by his own direct knowledge. Next he thought about teaching Uddaka Rāmaputta, who had taught him meditation to attain the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, but devas told him that Uddaka had passed away the previous night; and he realised this was true by his own direct knowledge. "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" is a literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a tin soldier and his love for a paper ballerina. After several adventures, the tin soldier perishes in a fire with the ballerina. The tale was first published in Copenhagen, Denmark by CA Reitzel on 2 October 1838 in the first booklet of Fairy Tales Told for Children. New Collection. with Andersen's "The Daisy" and "The Wild Swans". The tale was Andersen's first not based upon a folk tale or a literary model. "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" has been adapted to various media including ballet and animated film. "The Steadfast Tin Soldier is the first tale Andersen wrote that has neither a literary model nor a folk tale source but is straight from Andersen's imagination. It marks a new independence in his writing, and is the zenith of his evocation of the nineteenth century nursery world with its toy dancers, castles, and swans. The tale is colored with Andersen's own fatalism, his faithfulness, his sense of being different, and a sexual repression which lies beneath its nineteenth century stiff-lipped stoicism.
